If a collegue and I swap PCs for one day - do I still get my messages?

    Sure. If you login with your own login name, you will get your notes on that PC. Obviously all notes sent by you have your name as sender.


My notes cover all other applications behind. Sometimes I do not like this. What can I do?

    Notes appear on top to draw attention to them. Sometimes this interfers with other applications. To deactivate this option, click with the right mouse button on the program icon of A Smaller Note in the task bar and deactivate the option "Notes are always on top".
    New notes will still arrive on top but are moved to the desktop once you use a different application. In this way you will see all new notes but they will not hinder your work with other applications.


Why do old messages "flicker" while I type a new one?

    A Smaller Note stores the last few messages written by you. When you start typing a new note beginning with the same characters (this is case-sensitive) as one of the old notes, the old note is shown again. This saves you time if you want to send the same note again to the same or to another user. Of course this does not prevent you from typing a new note.


Can I send the same note to different users?

    Yes. Just enter all recipients seperated by commas. To save time, you may at any time use the dialog "Search recipient" instead of typing the name.
    You can send the note to all members of a group by entering the group name followed by a colon. Misspelled names remain in the addressee field so you can correct them.


What happens to notes sent to me while my PC is turned off?

    Other users may send you notes at any time. If your PC is not turned on, or, being portable, you are not connected to the network, the note is stored on the server and delivered as soon as the PC is again connected to the network. The notes appear immediately without you having to check a mailbox.


How do I change my user name?

    Click with the right mouse button on the program icon of A Smaller Note in the task bar. Choose the menu item "Settings" and the appearing dialog displays on its tab "User" your current user name. You may change this name (max. 10 characters) at any time, provided the name is not already used by another user.


How can I install the program in our office/our company?

    The software can be installed locally on each PC or only once on a server in the network. In both cases a post office (a data file with the name «note.asn») has to be created on a network drive that can be accessed by all users with read and write privileges.
  1. Program files and post office on a (file-)server

    • Execute the self-extracting installation program of the downloadable shareware version «notee.exe».
    • Follow the steps of the installation program and choose, as the desired installation folder, a network drive that can be accessed by all future users with read and write privileges.
    • Execute the just installed program file «note.exe» by using the Explorer of Windows.
    • You will be welcomed by the set up assistant of the program.
    • Now, create a new post office. It will be placed in the installation folder.
    • Then follow the remaining steps of the set up assistant. Choose your own user name.
    • After this, the installation is complete.

      All that is left to do is to set up the users. This is easy:

    • A new user simply has to start A Smaller Note in the installation folder. Alternatively, you can execute A Smaller Note the first time from a login script.
    • A Smaller Note will notice that it is started the first time by the user and will welcome him with the set up assistant. In this way each new user is asked for his/her name.
    • Finish the set up assistant and the new user is ready to send and receive notes.

      As you can see, the set up of A Smaller Note is very simple. Later you can change any setting or delete a user on the administrator tab.

  2. Local program files and post office on a (file-)server

    • Execute the self-extracting installation program of the downloadable shareware version «notee.exe» on each PC you want to use the software.
    • Follow the steps of the installation program and choose, as the desired installation folder, a local drive and folder.
    • Execute the just installed program file «note.exe» on each PC. The first time create a new post office on a shared network drive that can be accessed by all users with read and write privileges. On the first start of any other PC, do not create a new post office but link to the existing one.
    • Follow the remaining steps of the set up assistant. Choose your own user name.
    • Finish the set up assistant and the new user is now ready to send and receive notes.
    Please notice, that the shareware version is restricted. To prevent a free use of the program every fifth note on the average will be replaced by a shareware hint.

How can I deinstall A Smaller Note?

    The way to deinstall depends on the way A Smaller Note was installed.
  1. Program files and post office on a (file-)server

    • Exit A Smaller Note on all PCs.
    • Then remove the link to A Smaller Note from each start up program group.
    • Subsequently, you only have to delete the program folder of A Smaller Note. You can do this manually or by using the application Add/Remove of the control panel from the PC you have used to install the software.

  2. Local program files and post office on a (file-)server

    • Exit A Smaller Note on all PCs.
    • Use the automatic deinstallation routines on all PCs on which you have installed A Smaller Note by using the application Add/Remove of the control panel.
    • Delete the post office.

What are the shareware-limitations of A Smaller Note?

    You may test the free shareware version of A Smaller Note to evaluate its usefulness. To encourage buying the full version, the shareware version has a restriction: The content of one out of five notes is not delivered but replaced by a shareware hint. A similar hint comes up every time the shareware version is started. This limitation permits one to test all features of the program.


How much is the registration fee for A Smaller Note?

    If you want to employ the application you have to register. The license fee is determined by the number of users. A license for 2 users of A Smaller Note costs only US$/EURO 20.-. You will receive a registration code. Entering the code will turn off all shareware limitations.

    Outside the European Union (EU) we will not charge any value added tax (VAT). Inside the EU we have to charge VAT except if you are outside Germany and have a VAT-ID (companies only).

How do I receive the registration code that turns the shareware version into a full version?

    Please use the registration assistant to order A Smaller Note. This allows you to print an order form which you can send by mail or fax. With the help of the registration assistant you can also create an e-mail, which you can send to us online. You will recieve your registration code by mail, fax or e-mail.
